Write down the house style you already have

Reverse everything you have shipped, find the choices you keep making without noticing, and turn them into a directive you can hand to anyone.

Most brands have a real house style that exists only in the head of whoever has been making the work. This is how it gets written down before that person goes on holiday, and how a freelancer matches it on their first attempt.

Why this will not look generic: The directive is distilled from work you already shipped and already approved, so it describes the style you actually have rather than the one a brand deck claims you have.

What you walk away with

  • A prompt for every piece in your back catalogue
  • The choices that recur across them, named and counted
  • A written style directive a freelancer could follow
  • A Brand DNA profile that applies it to new work automatically

Typical run: 30 to 200 pieces. Reverse the catalogue over /v1 in one pass, then do the distillation in a thread.

This one happens in one conversation

You bring: Your back catalogue, reversed and saved. Two years of it is better than twenty pieces.

Open with: Read every prompt in my library from the last two years. What choices do I keep making that I probably have not noticed, and what would someone need to be told to match them?

What the thread holds on to:

  • The whole catalogue at once, so a habit across two years is visible rather than a vague sense
  • The distinction between a deliberate rule and an accident you repeated
  • The draft directive, which you can argue with and tighten in place

Then you can just ask:

  • Which of these are deliberate and which are just the tool's defaults showing through?
  • Write this as a directive for a freelancer who has never seen our work
  • Where have we drifted in the last six months?

What the reverse actually gives you

Point it at: Two years of shipped work, reversed into one library folder.

What comes back (representative example): Across a hundred and forty pieces the constants are narrower than expected. The palette never leaves warm neutrals plus exactly one saturated accent, and the accent is almost always on the right of the frame. Light comes from camera-left in a hundred and nineteen of them. Nothing is ever shot straight-on; there is always between five and twenty degrees of rotation. Shadows are soft but never eliminated. The drift is visible too: the last six months have crept toward higher contrast and tighter crops, which nobody appears to have decided.

Things you would never have thought to type:

  • the accent colour almost always sitting right of frame
  • light from camera-left in 119 of 140 pieces
  • never straight-on, always five to twenty degrees of rotation
  • a six-month drift toward higher contrast that nobody decided

What you change: Nothing, and that is the point. You are writing down what is already true so the next person can match it, and deciding on purpose which parts of the drift to keep.

How it works

  1. Reverse the back catalogue (In your code) - Everything you shipped, not just the favourites. The habits show up in the ordinary work.
  2. File the catalogue - One folder, tagged by year if you want to see drift over time.
  3. Find the habits (In Claude) - Ask for what recurs, then argue with it. The first answer is usually too generous.
  4. Lock it as a profile - Turn the directive into a Brand DNA profile so new work inherits it instead of re-deciding.
