Take apart a thumbnail that is already earning clicks, generate your own plate, and set your own words over it.
A thumbnail designer runs $20 to $50 a video, and the ones worth copying are the ones you cannot brief, because you cannot name what they are doing. This names it, in two parts you can act on separately.
Why this will not look generic: The words are specified and then set by you rather than rendered by a model, so the title on the finished thumbnail is the one you typed instead of the lettering a generator invented.
Point it at: A thumbnail from your niche that is plainly out-clicking yours.
What comes back (representative example): A man in his early thirties shot from the chest up against a flat cobalt ground, turned three-quarters to camera with his eyebrows raised and his mouth open mid-word. He has been cut out and composited, with a thin white stroke following the silhouette to separate him from the backdrop. A hard key from the upper left throws a short shadow down the right side of his face, and a cool rim along the near shoulder lifts him off the blue. The right half of the frame is left deliberately empty. Colour is pushed hard: skin warm, background saturated, almost no mid-tones. Nothing in frame carries lettering of any kind.
Things you would never have thought to type:
What you change: Keep the empty half and the stroke, put your own face on the plate, and set your words over it in the last step. The plate prompt carries no lettering on purpose: generators garble rendered text, so the words arrive with a spec of their own - weight, case, colour and how each one is held off the plate - and you place them yourself.
